But judging from your objections, it seems like you're unfamiliar with what's actually proposed from BC, because most of what you say about the system isn't true..

First of all - there won't be any "super ridings". Rural constituencies will only elect 2-3 members and their size will be comparable to existing Federal constituencies (that only return 1 member). Urban constituencies (those that will actually elect 4 or more members) will be even smaller.

As for your impression of Alberta's experience with STV - the results are available on Wikipedia. Guess what - it never came to 40 candidates in either Edmonton or Calgary. Moreover - when STV was used in Manitoba to elect 10 Winnipeg MLAs in one constituency - even there it didn't come to 40 candidates. (Even 30 was rare.)

Typical numbers for a 6-7 seat Edmonton or Calgary was 20-25 candidates. That may sound like a lot, but if all those candidates are grouped by their party affiliation - it won't be that difficult to figure out who is who. Not to mention that for the Albertans in 1930s, 40s and 50s, those multiple-seat ridings were the only place where there was some hope for the opposition candidates.

As for the time it will take to count all the ballots - Ireland uses the same system and the counting process rarely takes more than 1-2 days. If counting becomes a problem - we can always use vote tabulation machines or even scanners that read handwriting (similar to the ones used in the Passport Office). Those will count all those ballots with all the preferences and fractional surpluses within hours.Leonardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01745434180812340088noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1262113763277382013.post-22541574669326575082009-04-17T03:47:00.000-03:002009-04-17T03:47:00.000-03:00The STV your talking about is not the system BC is...The STV your talking about is not the system BC is proposing.

BC is proposing electing multiple members under STV in super riding's.

The fact that BC ridings will be electing 4 to 7 members out of pools of 20 or more candidates turns into dozens of vote counts with complicated transfers and thresholds.

This will not make elections proportional and will turn BC elections into a cluster fuck.

In Calgary in the 30's and 40's we had the same STV system BC is proposing and it was an ungodly cluster fuck then and its an ungodly cluster fuck now. Imaging 40 candidates running around trying to campaign? Imagine counting taking days to complete.

This is what STV is and why I am against it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
